Get to know Amber

imageI left the classroom two years ago to be a stay home mommy to my daughter, E.  Its a decision that I have never regretted, as I much prefer Sesame Street to Shakespeare.

In my life before motherhood I taught English to high school students.  I hold a Bachelor’s degree in English Composition and Rhetoric and a Master’s Degree in Education.  Both of my degrees come from the University of Louisville, and I am a devoted fan of my beloved Cardinals!

My husband, Jeff, and I knew from the very beginning that I was going to try and stay home full time with our children.  It has been the desire of my heart to be home full time, and God has blessed us with the resources and opportunity.  After trying my hand at free lance writing for a season I launched my own blog, The Belly of the Whale, to share devotional writings for mommies and our adventures in the world of Tot School.

Our family is committed to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and we pray our lives are a testament to his grace and salvation.  Its our hope, and prayer, that one day our daughter will come to know Him as Savior, also.

DIY-My First Map of the World

Something I have been on the lookout for is a map of the world with the continents labeled.  I wanted something simple, but everything I was finding was either elaborate, or expensive, or both.  With my can do attitude, and a penchant for all things cheap, I set out to make my own map of the world for E to play with.  This foam puzzle is the result!

You will need:
A Marker
6 6x9 foam sheets
1 12x18 foam sheet
Downloadable Continent Templates (Note: Antarctica is not included)

100_0878 Steps:
1: Print Out Continent Templates for North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Europe and Australia

2: Cut out all the continents and lay them in place on your 12x18 foam sheet.  It will give you a visual and make sure that you allow enough space for each one.
100_08693: Take the continents and trace them on the 6x9 foam sheets with your marker.  When you’re tracing you may want to eliminate any tiny pennisulas and inlets.  For instance, I lumped England and Ireland in with the main land of Europe on the foam piece.  Baja, California and Japan got the axe.  A general outline of the continent is what you’re going for.  You can write the names on the continents at this point if you want to, also. 100_08684: Cut each one out and place it on the 12x19 foam sheet100_0870 5: Take your velcro and press both pieces together.  Use those two pieces and press them on the back of the continent you want to place.  Try to leave the others in place on your foam sheet so that you will know where to place each of them in relation to the others.  100_0874  6: After all the continents are placed, take your marker and trace around the outside of each of the continents to create an outline of all the continents.   You may need to bend some of the continents out of the way to get your marker into tight spots.  Again, general outlines.  100_0875 7:  When you remove your continents you’ll see an outline of the continents.  Your tot can use this as his/her puzzle guide.

100_0877 You’re all done!
100_0876Total for supplies: Around $8 (but you’ll have lots of foam and velcro for other projects!)
Time Invested: About an hour

If you make this for your tot let me know how it goes!  I would love to see some other maps!
